Now I have always felt that the work environment was never intended to be a fun or social place, that the workplace only needed to be pleasantly conducive to accomplishing the work required.

Problem there is that so many are addicted to being workaholics - or they make work their world so much that they've sacrificed their extra hours meant for fun so they can make more money.

Maybe it's time for things to go back that way again. Have the workplace be for actually performing work tasks, and give the employees enough time out of the work settings so they can pursue their own interests with their own individual families and friends.

I was always told it's never a good idea to socialize with the people you work with. Being too personal/friendly causes a loss of respect.
Gives people too big of a window to become inappropriately familiar with fellow employees, and too disrespectful of the workplace.

But hey, that's me.
I rarely go to company sponsored events.
Work is work, fun is fun, and for me, it works best for the twain never to meet.
