That $40 a visit may be the best investment you ever make in YOURSELF. Your health is more than worth it. I went through the same exact struggle a year and a half ago in deciding whether or not to go back to therapy. My co-pay is $50 a pop. I hemmed and hawed for a while, and ultimately decided that I was worth it, even if I had to scrimp in other places in my budget.

If the co-pay is steep for you, most counselors will work with their clients and adjust their own fees to get to a payment that will be manageable and enable continued treatment.
